ETHICS HINDERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPLANTATION IN KAZAKHSTAN – HEAD OF CARDIAC CENTER
05.02.2015
Transplantology development in Kazakhstan is directly connected with solving of ethical problems. Chairman of the Board of “National Research Cardiac Surgery Center” JSC Yuriy Pya informed about it during the briefing at the Central Communications Service under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, reports the correspondent of Kazprada.kz.
“Transplantation in Kazakhstan is developing, but the problems we face, not only are medical, but also social. In the context of medicine, we are ready – we train specialists, who can carry out such surgeries. But our society is not ready for donation from an ethical standpoint. As you can imagine, finding a donor for a child is even more difficult. In this we are far behind the countries, where donation is a normal practice. But I think that in the coming years we will come to average international standards. Only in our center 100 people are in line for transplantation, although we have an alternative – implantation of an artificial heart, and we have successfully realized it. In general, surgeries for donor heart transplantation will become routine, when we can cover the need, and that means 150-200 surgeries per year”, - said Yuriy Pya.
Head of the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center also added that on the average about 10 surgeries accrue to one million people in the world practice.
Meanwhile, the cost of heart surgery in Kazakhstan varies, he said: “There are high-cost surgeries, such as implantation of artificial heart, artificial ventricle, heart transplantation surgeries, and all these costs are covered by the government. On the average, one heart surgery costs 20 thousand dollars for the government”.
Summing up 2014 Yuriy Pya told about recognition reached by the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center – accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI), which is the evidence of the highest quality of medical services, safety of patients, use of correct treatment options and management in the health care institution. Receiving this accreditation is very prestigious and automatically gives an opportunity to enter the international arena and attracts hundreds of patients from abroad.
“At the end of 2014 we received international recognition – accreditation by JCI. We passed a serious examination, which covers not only professional level of specialists working in the clinic, but also all technical support of the hospital, the building itself. We have already become the center, where colleagues from neighboring countries come to train. In particular, we carried out a master class for colleagues from Russia. At the end of February we will conduct master classes for colleagues from Eastern Europe, Turkey, and possibly China. Also, recently we had a meeting with Tamara Duysenova, during which we discussed how to further develop cardiological and cardiac surgery services. I think we will find ways and means to develop”, – summarized head of the center.
